UNTIL I DISAPPEAR

2018 - ongoing  /  Iron oxide transferred onto paper  / 30 x 40 cm   These drawings are made by a repetitive gesture of pasting and then removing VHS tape in a rigorous and meditative approach. The oxide that remains on the mylar is then applied to a second time to give an almost white imprint, establishing a correspondence between the drawings. The imprints are the result of micro gestures and chance.  The title refers to the contemplative aspect of the repetitive actions that lead to a non dual state of consciousness by which the self is dissolved....

APPARITION

2018  /  Installation (VHS Tape)  / Dimensions variable   Site-specific installation at Berlin-weekly. Two fields of alternating lines intersect at the middle of the main space creating an interference pattern. Observing the work from a specific location reveals a four-pointed star that disappears when one walks past the gallery. A plan view reveals an “X” that stands for the unknown, unexplainable or unmeasurable.   The 9 piece work "Unitl I disappear" (VHS Tape's iron oxide transferred onto paper) was shown together in Berlin-Weekly....

VARIATIONS ON LINE

2016 - 2018  /  Installation (VHS Tape)  / Dimensions variable   In response to reading physicist David Bohm’s “Wholeness and the Implicate Order”, in which the author posits the idea of the totality of existence as an unbroken whole. He proposes an underlying implicate order from which the explicate unfolds and enfolds. These spatial drawings involve the viewer in a performative role by which his the drawing changes as he or she moves past or around it....

Vanessa Enriquez Latitudes

LATITUDES

2016  /  Installation (VHS Tape)  / Dimensions variable   Spatial drawing through 4 rooms of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague. The rails of the existing hanging system in the walls defines the trajectory of the projected drawing. Straight lines give in to sensual curves in a progression of greater depth and density, creating moments of stillness and intensity. The choreographed drawing whose lines are used not only to evoke an emotional response from viewers but also to create a physical response, acts as a metaphor for the increasing levels of intimacy in the alchemical/transformative process of integrating feminine and masculine aspects within ourselves....

Vanessa Enriquez Interference

PLAZEBO + INTERFERENCE

2016 / Installation in collaboration with J.MAYER.H (mosquito net and video) / Dimensions variable + Interference / Photography (sublimation print /  15 x 21 cm each   A pavilion intended to explore the notions of belief and anticipation and its effects on our perception. PLAZEBO is an intimate reflection on the spaces both physical and mental that we occupy whether conscious or unconsciously. It seeks to question and validate the strategies and resources that we use to soothe ourselves, however deceptive they might be. With a focus on the somatic experience, the exhibition presents an installation by Vanessa Enríquez whose pattern is revealed through our movement in the space. In a contrasting way, the video by J.MAYER.H is installed as a footnote, best viewed when we keep still. An aural dimension is created by pink noise, which permeates the space with sound similar to rain falling or leaves rustling. It is intended to slow and regulate our brain waves. A set of headphones offers binaural beats which are used to improve immune functions, facilitate relaxation, improve mood and contribute to the alleviation of stress. Through these visual and sonic stimuli, PLAZEBO establishes a dialogue between architectural and artistic articulations that are related to the issues of pattern, boundaries, movement and digitalization. Curated by Irina Ilieva  /  Photo documentation of installation by Ludger Paffrath   Deepening my engagement with this material, I produced a series of photographs which are evocative of the space continuum and the idea of the cosmic landscape or the multiverse....

Vanessa Enriquez Fluctuations

FLUCTUATIONS

2016 / Installation (magnetic tape) + 20 Min Performance / Dimensions variable   An installation and performance inspired by the idea of quantum fluctuations. In quantum physics, a quantum fluctuation is the temporary appearance of energetic particles out of empty space, as allowed by the uncertainty principle. Inspired by the idea that dark matter is made of primordial black holes I create drawings in space by the repetitive use of tape and the effect of gravity. A cognitive dissonance is experienced by the viewer through an optical illusion that forces the mind to open itself to the potential of an alternate reality. I incorporate the subtle flow of light and air currents, as well as the sonic qualities of the material to bring them to life. The concept of fluctuation becomes a metaphor of the human mental landscape and the mystery of what it means to be human. Performance in collaboration with sound artist Stefano Spada and documented by Sandro Cristallini. Presented as part of the 2016 Rimini Drawing Biennial.  ...

Vanessa Enriquez Silence Unravelled

SILENCE UNRAVELLED

2016 / Installation (magnetic tape) + 20 Min Performance / Dimensions variable   An installation and performance that centers on the notion of Silence as an inner state and encompasses the physical and mental aspects of unraveling: untangling, separating, investigating and solving. Continuing the exploration of discarded material, I reanimate meters of magnetic tape in order to intervene in space in a compelling way. The repurposing of these ribbons of information collapses their original function and opens up the potential for aesthetic and symbolic transformation. In an attempt to engage the audience in a collective experience of emptiness, I devise a performance as a framework for exploring the slowly shifting landscape of silence through evocative movement and sound. As a continuation of a previous performance dealing with the themes of death, silence and the void, this performance asks a dancer to improvise to a selection of Bach’s Suite for Cello. The premise of exploring the sonic qualities of magnetic tape and the idea of breaking through the “darkness” become the conduit for choosing the movements of particular Suites and determine the quality and rhythm of the dancer’s moves. At the end both performers stand and breath into two hanging scultpures, creating a myriad of drawings on the wall and hinting on the power of transformation and transcendence. Vanessa Enriquez Ending Time

ENDING TIME

2015 / Installation (plastic planters, nylon thread) + 20 Min Performance / Dimensions variable   This work is the result of an engagement with a series of dialogues titled The Ending of Time by philosopher J. Krishnamurti and physicist David Bohm. I walked the cemeteries listening to their exploration of the nature of humanity, the significance of death and the root of human conflict. During these walkalogues I collected disposable planters which were reanimated into a coherent whole. I then perforated the underlying geometry from each planter onto an inkjet print of its scanned image. The resulting ethereal hieroglyphs act as translations of the supernatural. Inspired by notions of death as rebirth, silence and presence, dancers were invited to improvise to a selection of Bach’s Cantatas with the premise of interacting through their movements with a rectangle of nylon thread which I installaed connecting two existing sculptures in a Cemetery’s Glasshouse. The sonic qualities of the thread occupy the silence that emerges from the pauses of the choir and offer an opportunity to bring our awareness to the subtler dimensions of life and what lies beyond. Vocal ensemble: Bettina Böhme, Christiane Wolf, Marliese Sondermann, Ralf Böhme Guest dancers: Liza Alpízar Aguilar, Maureen López Lembo...

Vanessa Enriquez Sequence

SEQUENCES / UNSEQUENCED

2014 - 2017  /  Graphite on paper / Chalk on prepared canvas   /   320 x 220 cm   Inspired by Zen thought and practice this series of drawings is an exercise in clearing the mind through focus and repetition by drawing circles freehand. I organize this drawing practice through a dynamic system of rules and constraints recurring to mathematical sequences. I play with different methods of prescribing values to movement and position. At other times (Unsequenced series), I intuitively compose without following any particular system. The resulting quality of the traces in both scenarios become a conduit for charting the topography of my mental environment in a determinate, contiguous period of time.   *With the support of The Banff Centre and the Benediktson Fellowship Fund.  ...

Vanessa Enriquez And so forth

AND SO FORTH

2015  /  Pyrography on paper  /  48 x 63 cm   This series furthers the meditative practice of drawing circles into the exploration of new materials and meanings. The technique of pyrography (writing with fire) allows me to draw by subtraction and addition concurrently and connect to fire as an essential ritual element. Part contemplative practice and part study of hermetic concepts, the drawings for this series draw on sacred symbols as both departure and destination points. N.1 As above, so below. As within, so without....
